Does the Apple Watch Track Sleep?

Yes. With Sleep Focus and Track Sleep with Apple Watch switched on, the watch records when you fell asleep, when you woke, how long you were actually asleep rather than merely in bed, and an estimate of how the night split between Awake, REM, Core and Deep. It also logs wrist temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate while you sleep.

The useful question is not whether it works but which of those numbers to trust. Below: what is measured versus inferred, how to switch it on, why the stages disagree with a sleep lab, and the one thing no watch can record — why the night went the way it did.

What it actually records

Two different kinds of number come out of a night, and they deserve different levels of confidence.

Measured, and reliable:

  • Time asleep versus time in bed. The watch separates the two, which is the single most useful thing it does — most people overestimate how much of the night they were asleep.
  • Bedtime and wake time, without you remembering to press anything.
  • Heart rate and respiratory rate through the night.
  • Wrist temperature deviation from your own baseline, on Series 8 and later, after a few nights of calibration.

Estimated, and worth holding loosely:

  • Sleep stages — Awake, REM, Core and Deep. These are inferred from movement and heart-rate variability, not measured directly.

That distinction is the whole story of wearable sleep tracking. Everything in the first list is a fact about your night; the second is a well-informed guess.

How to turn it on

Sleep tracking is not on by default, which is why plenty of people conclude their watch cannot do it.

  1. On iPhone, open the Health app → BrowseSleep, and set up a sleep schedule.
  2. In the Watch app → Sleep, turn on Track Sleep with Apple Watch.
  3. Wear the watch to bed, snug enough not to slide around, and make sure it has enough charge for the night — a habit of charging while you shower rather than overnight is what makes this stick.

Sleep Focus dims the screen and silences notifications at your scheduled bedtime. You can track sleep without it, but the schedule is what teaches the watch when to expect you asleep.

How accurate is it?

Split the question in two, because the answers are very different.

Asleep versus awake: good. Modern wrist wearables agree with polysomnography — the overnight lab test — on whether you were asleep at a given moment the large majority of the time. The classic weakness is lying still while awake: stay motionless with a calm heart rate and a watch will happily score you as asleep. If you spend an hour a night awake but still, expect the watch to flatter you.

Which stage you were in: much weaker. Stage classification from wrist signals is meaningfully less reliable than the awake/asleep call, and Deep in particular is the hardest to pin down. A lab distinguishes stages from brain activity; a watch is reasoning from your pulse and your wrist. Treat a single night's stage breakdown as noise and the month's trend as a signal.

Practical rule: trust the duration, treat the architecture as an estimate, and compare it only against your own history, never against a friend's numbers or a published ideal.

What a watch cannot tell you

A watch is very good at what happened and completely blind to why. It records a 5 hour 40 minute night; it does not record the second glass of wine, the 9pm work call, the room that was too warm, the noisy street, the antihistamine, or the fact that the baby woke twice.

That gap matters because the why is the part you can change. Nobody improves their sleep by learning they got 43 minutes of Deep. People improve their sleep by noticing that every night under six hours followed a late finish, or that the good weeks are the ones with a consistent wake time.

Using the watch and a diary together

The two halves fit neatly, and it takes about fifteen seconds a morning.

  • Let the watch handle the clock. Times asleep and awake, recorded without you doing anything.
  • Add the context yourself. Alcohol, caffeine after lunch, exercise, stress, screens, illness, the room temperature — a few words is plenty.
  • Read them together over a fortnight. Two weeks is where patterns become visible; a single night tells you nothing you did not already know from how you feel.

Which models, and what about the iPhone alone?

Every Apple Watch running watchOS 9 or later can track sleep and estimate stages, including the SE. The extras are model-dependent: wrist temperature needs Series 8 or later, Ultra, or SE (2nd generation) with a recent watchOS, and Apple's sleep apnea notifications — which look for a breathing-disturbance pattern over 30 days and are not a diagnosis — need Series 9, Ultra 2 or later.

Without a watch, an iPhone alone will not measure your sleep. It can hold a sleep schedule and Sleep Focus, and it will store whatever you or another app writes into Health, but there is no sensor on a phone on the nightstand that knows when you fell asleep. A phone under the pillow is worse than useless — it wakes you up. Log the times by hand instead; two weeks of honest bedtimes beats a month of guessed ones.
