Sleep Tracking Apps: How to Read the Numbers

Sleep apps come in three kinds, and they are not rival versions of the same product: a phone left on the mattress, a wearable on your wrist or finger, and a diary you fill in yourself. Each senses something genuinely different, and only one of them records why the night went the way it did.

The three kinds of sleep tracker
Before comparing apps, it helps to know what the thing under the app is physically able to notice.

Two things follow from that table. First, a phone alone does not measure sleep — no matter what the app's screenshots suggest, a device on the nightstand is inferring your night from noise and vibration. These kinds combine happily. A wearable for the clock plus a diary for the context is the most useful pairing most people can assemble, and it costs about fifteen seconds a morning.
How to read the readout
Most sleep apps show four things. They deserve very different amounts of trust.
- Time asleep versus time in bed — the number that actually matters. Almost everyone overestimates how much of the night they were asleep, and the gap between the two is where the problem usually lives.
- Sleep efficiency — time asleep divided by time in bed, as a percentage. Above roughly 85% is generally considered healthy. Much lower usually means you are spending more hours in bed than you are sleeping.
- A sleep score — not a measurement. It is a vendor's weighted formula over duration, timing, awakenings and heart rate, the recipe is proprietary, and it changes when the app updates. A 78 in one app and a 62 in another can describe the same night. Read it only against your own history, never against a friend's.
- Stage percentages — estimates, inferred from movement and heart rate. Light, deep and REM are real and they matter (see sleep cycles explained), but no consumer device measures them directly, and deep sleep is the hardest of the three to get right.
A normal-looking night, for most adults: seven to nine hours asleep, ten to twenty minutes to drop off, a handful of brief awakenings you may not remember, and efficiency comfortably above 85%. Waking two or three times is not a fault — it is how sleep is built.
What genuinely warrants attention, and none of it is a stage percentage: regularly under six hours; taking more than half an hour to fall asleep, or lying awake more than half an hour in the night, on three or more nights a week for three months or longer; sleepiness that affects your driving or your work; or snoring, gasping and pauses in breathing that someone else has noticed. Those are conversations to have with a doctor, not settings to change in an app.
Why two apps disagree about the same night
Run a watch and a phone app on one night and you will get two different answers. That is expected, and knowing why keeps you from chasing the discrepancy.
- Different sensors. A wrist reads your pulse; a phone on the mattress reads vibration. They are not looking at the same thing.
- Different definitions of falling asleep. Some apps start the clock at lights out, some at the first stretch of stillness, some at a heart-rate drop. That alone moves sleep onset by twenty minutes.
- Different rules for awakenings. One app counts every wake-up, another ignores anything under five minutes — so one reports a broken night and the other a solid one.
- Different algorithms, quietly revised. Vendors retune their models in updates. Your average can shift without your sleep changing at all.
The practical rule: pick one and stay with it. The value of a tracker is in the comparison between your own nights, and switching apps resets that baseline to zero. If two apps disagree, neither is lying to you — trust the one whose method you understand, and trust duration over any composite score.
What no tracker can tell you
Every one of these apps is good at what happened and completely blind to why. It records a five-hour-forty night. It does not record the second glass of wine, the 9pm work call, the room left at 24°C / 75°F, the noisy street, the antihistamine, or the espresso after lunch.
That gap is the whole problem, because the why is the only part you can change. Nobody sleeps better for learning they got 43 minutes of deep sleep. People sleep better for noticing that every night under six hours followed a late finish, or that the good weeks are the ones where they got up at the same time on Saturday.

What to look for when choosing one
Six questions, roughly in order of how much they will matter to you six months from now.
- Does it answer your actual question? Snoring recordings, sleep timing, dream notes and CPAP logging are four different jobs, and no app is best at all of them.
- Does it capture context, not just numbers? A notes field is what makes a month of data explain itself.
- Can you get your data out? PDF, CSV, XLSX or JSON export, on demand and without paying extra. If a clinician ever wants two weeks of sleep, you will need it.
- Does it work without buying hardware? An app that only functions with a particular ring or band is a hardware purchase with a subscription attached.
- Is it honest about what it measures? An app that presents estimated stages as measurements is telling you something about how it treats the rest of its numbers too.
- What happens to your data? Read this one before you install, not after.
That last point deserves plain language. When you sleep is health data. It reveals your working hours, your travel, your drinking, when you are ill and who you share a bed with — and the business model behind a free sleep app is not always obvious from its listing. Some apps require an account, keep your nights on their servers, and share data with advertising or analytics partners. Others keep everything on your device. Neither is hidden: the App Store privacy label and the privacy policy both say which, and it takes two minutes to check.
Three specific things worth confirming: whether an account or email is required at all, whether data is sold or shared with third parties, and whether you can export and delete everything yourself.

Track two weeks, then read the trend

What is the best sleep tracking app?
There isn't one, because the three kinds do different jobs. If you want automatic times, you need a wearable. If you want to know why your sleep is poor, you need somewhere to record the context. Can an app track my sleep without a watch or wearable?
