Pulse and Blood Pressure: What's the Difference?

Your monitor shows three numbers — systolic, diastolic, and pulse — and it's natural to assume they move together. They don't. Blood pressure measures the force on your artery walls; pulse (heart rate) measures how often your heart beats per minute. One can be high while the other is low, and each tells a different story about your cardiovascular health.
Two different measurements
Blood pressure is force: how hard blood pushes against artery walls at the heart's peak effort (systolic) and at rest between beats (diastolic), in mmHg. Pulse is frequency: beats per minute (bpm).
The classic proof they're independent: a fit endurance runner might read 105/65 with a resting pulse of 48 — low pressure, low rate, both healthy. Someone dehydrated on a hot day might read 95/60 with a pulse of 105 — the heart beating faster to compensate for low pressure. And a person with stiff arteries can have a calm pulse of 62 alongside pressure of 165/95.
A useful mental model: pressure is the water pressure in the pipes; pulse is how often the pump cycles. The pump can cycle fast against low pressure and slowly against high pressure.

Pulse varies with fitness, age, temperature, medication (beta-blockers lower it), caffeine, stress, and illness — a fever typically adds about 10 bpm per degree Celsius. As with blood pressure, your resting average and trend mean more than any single value.
Do they ever move together?
Sometimes — exercise and acute stress raise both, briefly and healthily. But there is no fixed link, and that has a practical consequence: you can't estimate one from the other. A normal pulse doesn't mean normal blood pressure (remember, hypertension is usually symptomless and often occurs with a calm heart rate), and a racing pulse during a panicky moment doesn't mean your blood pressure is dangerous.
Persistently unusual combinations are the ones worth noting for your doctor: a resting pulse consistently above 100 (tachycardia), below 50 without athletic fitness (bradycardia), a heartbeat that feels irregular, or a fast pulse alongside low blood pressure and dizziness.
The third number: mean arterial pressure (MAP)
Some apps and clinicians track MAP — mean arterial pressure — a weighted average of your two blood pressure numbers, approximated as diastolic + one-third of the difference between systolic and diastolic. For 120/80 that's about 93 mmHg.
Why weighted toward diastolic? Because the heart spends roughly twice as long relaxing as contracting, so the diastolic value dominates the pressure your organs actually experience over time. A MAP of roughly 65–100 mmHg indicates enough steady pressure to perfuse organs; clinicians rely on it in critical care, and some cardiology patients (for example, people with an LVAD heart pump, whose blood flow is continuous rather than pulsing) track MAP as their primary number.
For most home users, MAP is context rather than a target — but it comes free with every reading if your app calculates it.
Tracking both, together
Since your monitor already measures pulse with every blood pressure reading, log them together — one row, three values, as in our log template. Over weeks, that gives you and your doctor three trends for the price of one habit: pressure, resting heart rate, and their relationship. A falling resting heart rate alongside stable pressure, for instance, is a classic signature of improving fitness from an exercise program.
