Body fat percentage is the share of your weight that is fat, as opposed to muscle, bone, organs, and water. Two people can weigh the same with wildly different figures — which is why this number tells you things the scale and the BMI chart cannot.

What body fat percentage actually measures
Body fat comes in two kinds; only one is optional.
Essential fat is structural: organ cushioning, insulation, hormone production. Men need roughly 2 to 5 percent; women considerably more, around 10 to 13 percent, largely for reproductive health. Dropping below is genuinely dangerous, not impressively lean.
Storage fat is the reserve — the layer under the skin plus visceral fat around the abdominal organs. Visceral fat is most strongly linked to type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease — and responds fastest when you become more active.
The percentage folds all of it into one figure: how much fat you carry, but not where — which is why it pairs so well with waist-to-height ratio, a direct read on visceral fat.
Healthy body fat percentage ranges
Unlike BMI, the ranges are sex-specific — women carry substantially more essential fat. The widely used adult categories:

Two caveats. Body fat rises with age at a stable weight, so a few points above the "fitness" band in your fifties is unremarkable. Sitting very low for long carries real costs, particularly for women — disrupted or absent periods, bone density loss, hormonal problems. Lower is not automatically better.

Every method estimates rather than measures, and they disagree — sometimes by a lot.

About the bioimpedance scales most people own: current travels more easily through water, so hydration moves the reading — a workout or a salty meal can swing it several points with no change in your body. They are trend instruments, not measurement instruments.
Getting a number you can actually use
Since every home method has meaningful error, chase consistency, not accuracy — an imprecise method used identically still shows the direction.
- One method, always. Comparing a caliper to a smart scale only proves they disagree.
- Same conditions. Morning, after the bathroom, before eating or exercise.
- Judge by the month. Daily movement is mostly hydration noise — the same phenomenon behind ordinary daily weight fluctuation.
- Track it alongside weight, not instead. Weight flat while body fat falls is what recomposition looks like — invisible if you only watch the scale.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?
Broadly 18 to 24 percent for men and 25 to 31 percent for women, with the leaner "fitness" bands just below. Both ranges shift upward slightly with age, and going far below them carries its own health risks.
Are smart scales accurate for body fat?
Not as absolute numbers. Bioimpedance scales pass a small current through your body, and hydration changes the result — errors of 4 to 8 percentage points are common. They are still useful for tracking direction if you measure under identical conditions every time.
Is body fat percentage better than BMI?
